Transcendence: Art by Randall Ensley

 

This is an idea I'd had for over a decade sketching different variations of it until I stumbled across an old educational toy comprised of Moire Array patterns. I finally felt that that was the missing piece, to comprise the rays emanating from the central figure of moire type patterns, very symmetrical, to achieve a hopefully somewhat psychedelic effect. 

I've also been influenced here by Indigenous Australian Art that I've seen.  Some of the artwork vibrates and stimulates the eyeball.  There is movement on the canvas created by the strobing effect, the indigenous art uses mostly dots and points and I chose to use alternating rays.

Beaumont Mural Festival: A Success!

 Wow, I had a great time at the Beaumont Mural Festival (Texas). I was invited to produce four murals on a street art cube installation.

Beaumont Mural Festival

I was invited to make some street art at the Beaumont Mural Festival in Beaumont, Texas this weekend. I was given a cube installation to paint and had a great time.  Had the opportunity to interact with hundreds of festival attendees and sold some art prints as well.

Star Wars Commission Art/These are the Droids you're looking for

This was a commission someone asked for for a huge Star Wars fan. I drew Star Wars scenes and characters in the border of my art print Transcendence. It came out pretty cool I think!  Some of my faves from this piece are the Darth Vaders, Darth Maul, the two Jawas on the bottom, Cloud City, the Death Star and the Probe Droid. (I like Star Wars too!)

The Art of Randall Ensley

 I'm using Canvy to display some of my artwork for online posts.  The app allows the user to display their art in a variety of virtual rooms with a selection of frames, sizing, and wall colors.

The pricing for Canvy is reasonable, I'm using the $15 per month option. You get a discount if you pay a year in advance which makes the cost about $12.40 per month. With these two options one gets access to approximately 500 virtual rooms and a website.  There is a free version available too, however, your art is displayed with a Canvy watermark and you only get access to a limited number of virtual rooms.

I recommend it!

I agree with this sentiment...almost everybody draws when they're kids, but at some point most stop or it morphs into doodlings on your notebook. I stopped drawing for a long time but started back in earnest at around age 24 or 25, then took another big break thinking I would never be doing art again. In 1997 I was inspired I think by Comet Hale-Bopp's appearance and started creating stipple drawings of astronomical objects and dinosaur bones which led to me doing some illustrations for science fiction magazines, webzines and books, and showing my art at art shows both mainstream and science fiction oriented.

I have a bit of fixated thought about death and I visit, just about daily, the Wikipedia listings of notable persons who've passed away that day. As I am posting tonight, I notice Facebook is suggesting as a friend request a gentleman at work who died a couple of months ago. A gem of a person and lost in the prime of life.  The same thing happens on LinkedIn.  I am urged to connect with people who I know are no longer with us.  Do I want to connect with them?  Yes, but not quite yet...

So, I am often pondering our eventual end and it creeps into my artwork, which often features skulls. I also enjoy tid-bits and art pieces that have skulls and skeletons. My most recent purchase, an action figure from Revoltech based one of the skeletal warriors designed by Ray Harryhausen for Jason and the Argonauts (1957) is something I have coveted for some time. I was just in my art studio and looked around at all the skulls in plain view, whether in my artwork or in toys and pictures, and you have to wonder "what's up with this guy?"

I think the skull is a powerful item to feature in art. I was lucky enough to see a Jim Dine exhibit in the mid-80's in Dallas, I believe, and he had some very memorable drawings which left an abiding impression with me. Recently I attended an M.C. Escher exhibition at the New Britain Museum of America Art which left me transcended. One of my favorites of Escher's is the skull embedded in the pupil of an eye at super close up view.

I will be exhibiting my science fiction art at Boskone 48 this weekend. The con and art show are solid New England SF mainstays and I am proud to be included. Among the art I am showing are these four illustrations among others. I know Hugo Award winning artist Bob Eggleton has art in the show and I am very excited about seeing his gallery.

Crystal Skull

These are some inked on vellum sketches for a character that would be too bizarre for the story they were drawn for. The character is still odd, you just can't see his brains now.

Key of Pain

What limited success I have had as an illustrator and artist has been due in large part to this illustration, Key of Pain, which first appeared in the science fiction magazine The Leading Edge for the short story Key to Pain.
It won 3rd place in the 65th Annual Connecticut Artists Exhibition, has been accepted in some juried art shows and has been reprinted a few times, including in the Association of Science Fiction Artists (ASFA) quarterly publication.
It will be on view this weekend in Boston at the NESFA science fiction convention, Boskone 46, art show. It will also be available for sale along with prints of the piece. Hope to see you in Boston!

Skulls and Stars

This illustration is a companion piece to "Cain's Legacy" which appeared in the magazine The Leading Edge. Skulls, skulls, skulls...I love 'em! But so does everyone else if the t-shirt selection at Walmart is any indication. It's archetypal this fascination, people just can't get enough of it.
