Beaumont Mural Festival: A Success!

Wow, I had a great time at the Beaumont Mural Festival (Texas). I was invited to produce four murals on a street art cube installation.

Here's some pics of the result

And a video of me and my granddaughter putting up a stencil for the 8 foot x 8 foot wall on one side of the cube.

Star Wars Commission Art/These are the Droids you're looking for

Click on the pic for more detail

This was a commission someone asked for for a huge Star Wars fan. I drew Star Wars scenes and characters in the border of my art print Transcendence. It came out pretty cool I think!  Some of my faves from this piece are the Darth Vaders, Darth Maul, the two Jawas on the bottom, Cloud City, the Death Star and the Probe Droid. (I like Star Wars too!)

The Art of Randall Ensley

I'm using Canvy to display some of my artwork for online posts.  The app allows the user to display their art in a variety of virtual rooms with a selection of frames, sizing, and wall colors.

Here's the link:  www.randallensley.art

The pricing for Canvy is reasonable, I'm using the $15 per month option. You get a discount if you pay a year in advance which makes the cost about $12.40 per month. With these two options one gets access to approximately 500 virtual rooms and a website.  There is a free version available too, however, your art is displayed with a Canvy watermark and you only get access to a limited number of virtual rooms.

I recommend it!

M.C. Escher exhibit begins in Houston March 2022

I am looking forward to this upcoming M. C. Escher exhibition at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. Lovely wife Pam took me to an Escher exhibit at the New Britain Museum of American Art about a decade ago. The most meaningful, transcendent and transformative art exhibit I have ever been to. Escher's art, widely seen in books, posters and prints, is a different experience when the original is viewed three feet from your face. Highly recommended, this exhibition features over 400 of Escher's works.

It was one of the first pieces hung.  Good spot!

The annual Hygienic Art Show opened this past weekend and I made the above piece for it.  The Hygienic Art Show is always a ton of fun and displays a variety of art styles!

Interior art for Psychosis #1

Cain's Legacy II

Cain's Legacy
I have a bit of fixated thought about death and I visit, just about daily, the Wikipedia listings of notable persons who've passed away that day. As I am posting tonight, I notice Facebook is suggesting as a friend request a gentleman at work who died a couple of months ago. A gem of a person and lost in the prime of life.  The same thing happens on LinkedIn.  I am urged to connect with people who I know are no longer with us.  Do I want to connect with them?  Yes, but not quite yet...

So, I am often pondering our eventual end and it creeps into my artwork, which often features skulls. I also enjoy tid-bits and art pieces that have skulls and skeletons. My most recent purchase, an action figure from Revoltech based one of the skeletal warriors designed by Ray Harryhausen for Jason and the Argonauts (1957) is something I have coveted for some time. I was just in my art studio and looked around at all the skulls in plain view, whether in my artwork or in toys and pictures, and you have to wonder "what's up with this guy?"
Achmet

I think the skull is a powerful item to feature in art. I was lucky enough to see a Jim Dine exhibit in the mid-80's in Dallas, I believe, and he had some very memorable drawings which left an abiding impression with me. Recently I attended an M.C. Escher exhibition at the New Britain Museum of America Art which left me transcended. One of my favorites of Escher's is the skull embedded in the pupil of an eye at super close up view.

I will be exhibiting my science fiction art at Boskone 48 this weekend. The con and art show are solid New England SF mainstays and I am proud to be included. Among the art I am showing are these four illustrations among others. I know Hugo Award winning artist Bob Eggleton has art in the show and I am very excited about seeing his gallery.
Gregory Manchess is the guest artist. Exciting! Below is a link to a previous Greg Manchess post.
If you are in Boston this weekend, February 18-20, 2011 and love art, science fiction and thought provoking panels, Boskone will be held at Boston Westin Marriot.

One of my favorite science fiction artists has always been Stephen Hickman. I am an avid SF reader and his art adorns many of the book covers in the Science Fiction section of bookstores. Famous for his Tolkien, Lovecraft and own creations, I am just learning tonight that his art is on over 400 book covers. Amazing!

I had the pleasure of meeting him at the 2006 Writers of the Future awards where he was part of a week long artists workshop given to the Illustrator winners. What good advice he gave and interest he displayed in the aspiring artists!

Science Fiction Art - Jonny Quest Robot Spies on Steroids

Hey, I'd be running too. This art, or maybe now a variation on it sans robots and replaced by air platform military assassins, will be appearing in some concept art for a current project. This is inspired by just about every science fiction cliche from my age 3-9 year old TV viewing, including the War of the Worlds, Jonny Quest, etc. Wish the robots were just a little more creepier and insectoid-y 'cause bugs freak me out.

Virgil Finlay Space Man

Me, a big Virgil Finlay fan, I don't remember ever seeing this illustration by my idol and biggest influence. It is perfect! Showing the 1950's version of the ideal fit for a space traveler. Love the books piled behind our intrepid astronaut.

Final Frontier

Image copyright 2002 Randall Ensley

Final Frontier

The illustration "Final Frontier" is a non-commission piece that I couldn't get out of my head and finally had to put pen to paper. It remains one of my more popular pieces and I'd be pleased to answer any questions viewers have regarding it.
"Final Frontier" also won the Judges Choice ribbon at NoreasCon IV/WorldCon 2004 Art Show held in Boston, MA and was featured in Diamond Comics Previews March 2006 when I was the Diamond Comics Star Artist of the Month.
