Project Progress

What's happening with me and the secret project? Well, I have tons of reference materials and probably all that I need to put the finishing touches on the dream (for me) project. I have had some focus and psycho-art problems...the project is so awesome it is hard to look straight into; like looking into the sun! I have some good and wild material and concepts and just have to put pen to paper and finish.
My prolificacy, never my strongest suit, has certainly been subdued and just have to get over it and grab my pens. Comics Mentor website and facebook page have been helpful. I am almost emerging from dormancy.

Rollerball Tokyo

This is a cool poster that I have not come across before, courtesy of Nostalgia on Wheels blog. Once again, if you haven't read the short story "Roller Ball Murder" by William Harrison, please do so. Yummy!

These are some inked on vellum sketches for a character that would be too bizarre for the story they were drawn for. The character is still odd, you just can't see his brains now.

Anybody remember Spinball Wars and Inferno from 1970's British Comics? They were Rollerball "homages" that had interesting art.
I remember them well and drawing my own motorcycle crashes now. Death, Gore, Fun!

Rollerball Anyone?

In my quest to bring you all things Rollerball, please check out the above. I don't speak the language but I am pretty sure this says "Rollerball." Love the flames! And the font is definitely an attempt at the font used on the US released movie posters. Very creative.

Rollerball Original Movie Poster art by Robert "Bob" Peak

I have posted previously on Rollerball art and the art of Robert Peak, yet I failed to show his most iconic image related to Rollerball, the movie poster from the 1975 release. I think it's great and as a kid, actually bought the movie poster at a comic convention years before seeing the movie. At the same convention I bought the short story anthology "Roller Ball Murder" by William Harrison. Harrison went on to write the screenplay for Rollerball after Academy Award winning director Norman Jewison expressed intense interest in making a movie based on this awesome short story, Roller Ball Murder.
Lovers of great fiction should look into reading as much William Harrison as possible.

Check out this beautiful pre-production artwork for the movie Rollerball. The art is by Robert Peak who I have posted about previously. Once again, I recommend this movie to any science fiction fans who have not seen it. With the screenplay by William Harrison, direction by Norman Jewison and production design by Academy Award winner John Box, you can't go wrong.

Rollerball

I think it is now time to admit to the world my true love for the 1975 Norman Jewison film "Rollerball." Much reviled through the years for its focus on violence, I think the underlying message of the film, the triumph of the individual over the corporate/industrial complex is lost by some amid the flames and carnage. OK, OK, violent yes, but by today's standards pretty tame. I just saw an online ad for the animated movie "Turok" and the 1 minute 30 second trailer is equally as violent as the whole of Rollerball. I am looking for who currently owns the rights to the characters as I'd like to revive the franchise through a graphic novel or short series. Perfect for Dark Horse or Virgin. I am surprised by the number of science fiction fans who've never seen the movie, so, I would suggest, please do so!
